Slug Generator

Convert a title into a concise URL slug that is readable, lowercase, and search-friendly.

Runs instantly. No account required.

How to use the slug generator

  1. Paste your page title or keyword.
  2. Run the tool.
  3. Copy the slug into your CMS’s URL or permalink field.

The tool lowercases the text, swaps spaces and symbols for hyphens and caps it at 80 characters. It flags slugs over 60 characters so you know to trim them.

Slug tips

  • Trim filler. “the-complete-guide-to-the-best-ways-to-start-composting” can be “start-composting”.
  • Skip dates. “/best-laptops-2026” goes stale. “/best-laptops” can be updated every year.
  • Keep the keyword. Include the main phrase so the URL matches what people search for.
  • Avoid special characters. Accents, emoji and symbols can turn into hard-to-read codes in links.

Trimming a generated slug

The tool keeps every word from your title. Trim it by hand to the words that matter:

Frequently asked questions

What is a URL slug?

The slug is the part of the URL after the domain that names the page. In example.com/blog/how-to-start-composting, the slug is "how-to-start-composting".

What makes a good slug?

Short, lowercase, words separated by hyphens and clearly describing the page. Leave out dates and filler words when you can, so the URL still makes sense after you update the page.

Should I use hyphens or underscores?

Use hyphens. Google recommends hyphens to separate words in URLs.

Should I change the slug of a page that already ranks?

Only if you have a strong reason. If you do, set up a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one so you keep visitors and links.

How long should a slug be?

There is no fixed limit. Under 60 characters is a good habit, and 3 to 5 words is often enough.
