Writing FAQs people (and AI) will use

  • Use the words people search. “How much does a patio cost?” beats “Pricing information”.
  • Answer in the first sentence. Then add a detail or two. AI tools often quote the first line.
  • Keep answers short. Two to four sentences is plenty.
  • Skip sales questions. “Why are we the best?” isn’t something people search for.
  • Keep them current. Update prices, dates and policies when they change.

Frequently asked questions

What is FAQ schema?

FAQ schema is FAQPage structured data. It marks up a list of questions and answers on a page, so search engines and AI tools can read each question and its answer as a clear pair.

Will FAQ schema give me rich results in Google?

Probably not. Since August 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results mainly for well-known government and health websites. The markup is still valid and helps machines understand your page, but don't expect the dropdowns in search results.

How do I format my questions and answers?

Put each question on its own line, with its answer on the next line or lines. Leave one blank line between each pair. Multi-line answers are joined into one paragraph.

Where should I paste the code?

Paste it into the HTML of the same page that shows the FAQ, usually in the head or at the end of the body. Many CMS tools have a custom code field for this.

Can I add FAQ schema for questions that are not on the page?

No. Google's guidelines say the questions and answers in your markup must be visible to people on the page. Hidden FAQ markup can lead to a manual action.
